Tommy Lefroy in New York

London-based indie-rock duo Tommy Lefroy (Wynter Bethel and Tessa Mouzourakis) recently kicked off their short run of intimate shows at Heaven Can Wait in New York in support of their latest EP, born blue.

The group first formed in 2017 after Wynter came across Tessa’s cover of “Ketchum, ID” by indie supergroup boygenius. Since meeting, the two have been putting out original music, headlining shows, and opening for acts such as Niall Horan together as Tommy Lefroy. The band’s namesake is a reference to Irish politician Thomas Lefroy, who is believed to be an inspiration for Mr. Darcy, a character in Jane Austen’s book Pride and Prejudice.

This was my third time seeing Tommy Lefroy perform and each time I am impressed by their chemistry onstage and ability to connect with their audience. Heaven Can Wait’s ambient atmosphere set the tone for the evening; the tiny venue’s low stage and lack of a barricade allowed fans to stand right in front of the duo as they performed. Between songs, Wynter and Tessa took time to speak about the backstory of the songs they performed, which added context to their musical world. The duo played almost every song in their discography, including the entirety of born blue and fan favorites like “The Cause” and “The Mess.” Wynter and Tessa have formed a tight-knit relationship with their fanbase over the years, from offering book swaps at all of their concerts to taking the time to meet their fans after shows. As a longtime fan, I am so glad I got to attend this tour!
