Miss Grit in Detroit
Under an unique and creative light installation, Miss Grit — a non-binary NYC-based electronic artist — opened for The Last Dinner Party in Detroit, Michigan, on March 31, 2024 at the Majestic Theatre. Despite being a native to the suburbs of Detroit, Miss Grit announced that this was their first ever hometown show. They jokingly referred to the audience and city by it’s many nicknames — Rock City, Hockeytown, The Motor City, etc. — which added a humorous undertone to their song transitions before jumping into the serious stuff.
Born Margaret Dewey Sohn, they left Michigan to study music technology at New York University before taking on the moniker of Miss Grit to record and release their debut EP, Talk Talk, in 2019. In 2021, they released their second EP, Impostor, and, soon after signed with Mute Records with whom they released their debut full-length, Follow the Cyborg, in 2023.
Miss Grit is known for using their artistry to reject the boundaries between musical genres and challenge the themes of love and identity. While much of their music was written to support a full band, Miss Grit is recognized for their eerily calm voice and allowing their own guitar and synths to command the audience. Standing in the sold out venue, Miss Grit’s music engulfed you in it’s sound and captured your attention with an interesting lighting set up, featuring scribbles, colorful dots, and fanning shapes to control the visuals of their set.
Even though a corrupted memory card robbed us of most of the incredible imagery that Miss Grit produced, the music made a considerably memorable impact on us. They will continue supporting the Last Dinner Party on tour through mid-April, but have no other shows announced at the moment. If you are looking an all-encompassing concert experience, we definitely recommend following Miss Grit and keeping an eye out for future show announcements.
