Icelandic singer-songwriter Laufey brought The Bewitched tour to Detroit on October 25, 2023 at The Majestic Theatre. The venue name foreshadowed what the night had in store, a majestic night of fairytale music with Laufey's distinct sound of classical mixed with modern jazz and pop. 

Almost everyone who attended the show was dressed as if they were going to the symphony in the artist's signature style of collared shirts, ruffles, ribbons and ballet shoes. 

Classical music played through the speakers and light started to dim signifying the start of the show. Laufey's band took the stage: Heather Rivas on keys, Dario Bizio on bass, Maverick MacMillan on percussion and Adam Melchor who joined the ensemble on back up vocals and guitar.

As Laufey took the stage, the once quiet crowd who was waiting in anticipation erupted into screams as she took her guitar to play the opening notes of her song “Fragile”. The second Laufey started singing she lit up the venue both figuratively and literally as the beautiful and movie-like set design came to life. The set and lighting complimented the nature of her stage presence. The backdrop itself gave off the illusion of a starry sky which overall added to the magic of Laufey's musical stylings. 

A personal favourite moment of mine was when a fan project broke out during her song “From the Start”. Detroit fans held up red paper hearts that read "Detroit loved Laufey from the start". All in all she put on quite the unforgettable show and had the crowd dancing, singing and quite often in tears. Laufey shared her sentiments of being in love, finding love and finding herself through anecdotal stories that acted as prefaces to her songs. 

Time and time again Laufey thanked the crowd for giving her the space to mix all of her favourite genres together. Laufey closed the night off with a very personal song to her titled, “Letter to my 13 Year Old Self”, a song that holds everything she wishes she could tell her younger self about where she is now and not to worry. 

It was a magical night at The Bewitched Tour and Detroit can't wait to have Laufey back.
