Jessie Murph Drops Relatable Debut Album
Article by Makayla Wood
Jessie Murph is a young talented singer and songwriter from Alabama. Both of her parents were musicians which fostered her dream to become an artist. In early 2020, Murph began posting covers as well as original music on her Tik Tok account. She quickly started to gain a following. In 2021 she signed a record deal with Columbia Records and released her debut single, “Upgrade”, the same year.
At just nineteen years old, Murph dropped her debut album “That Ain't No Man, That’s The Devil,” on September 6th, 2024. The album's unique mix of country, pop, and rap genres, captures the attention of a broad audience. Murph’s powerful and raspy voice puts in perspective her negative views on men that she gained through personal experiences. This album also features multiple collaborations with other artists, including Teddy Swims, Jelly Roll, Bailey Zimmerman, and Amy Fisher.
The albums only two love songs, “Gotta Hold” and “Wild Ones” both speak on the topic of being in toxic relationships. “Gotta Hold” is an upbeat song that walks the audience through the feeling of knowing a relationship is toxic and the circumstances that keep you going back. This is resembled by the chorus, “And I keep dance, dance, dancing, oh, dancing, oh the devil gotta hold.” The most popular song on the new album,“Wild Ones” featuring Jelly Roll, focuses on the attraction to wild boys. In verse one, Murph is rapping a solo about all the wild things men do that some women find attractive. The catchy tune pulls you in with the first note and keeps you engaged through the entirety of the song.
The rest of the album is geared towards the resentment Murph has towards toxic men, which leads the audience to feel her anger and pain as they listen through the songs. In an interview with the Zach Sang Show, Murph states “It also does stem from like a resentment of like a long resentment of just like witnessing things throughout my life that have made me just not angry towards men, but angry toward (…) men.” We can see that these things didn't just happen directly to Murph, but also to people she was close to. A fan favorite, “Someone In This Room” featuring Bailey Zimmermen, takes us through a story of two lovers who bring out the worst in each other. It ends up getting so bad that they end up not recognizing the people they had become. Both Zimmerman and Muprh’s voices complement each other so well, making “Someone In This Room,” pleasing to the ear.
This album has a lot of heavy topics that you hope people never have to deal with. Unfortunately, these topics are, or have been at one time or another, a reality in many people’s lives. The lyrics speak to Murph’s fans, making “That Ain't No Man, That’s The Devil,” an album that will be, without a doubt, listened to for many years to come.
