House & Home and Suntitle Release Collaborative EP, Split
Article by Isabel Dowell
East Coast bands, House & Home and Suntitle, have recently discovered a new avenue for music releases. These two alt-rock outfits have created Split, a collaborative EP that features two songs from each group. House & Home brought “Cellophane” and “At The Bottom” to Split, while Suntitle have contributed the tracks “Bad Luck” and “At Your Feet”. While we’ve seen many artists feature one another on certain songs, I personally haven’t seen a collaboration quite like this.
Both House & Home and Suntitle rose from their respective areas of the United States – Richmond, VA and South Jersey – through the hard work of DIY touring, shows, and releasing music. The two groups have been close friends for the majority of their careers and are used to bouncing ideas off of one another, it just seemed obvious that they should take their joint efforts to the next level.
On Split, Suntitle shares, “We’ve known House & Home since October of 2017 and instantly became best friends. … They’re the best people and it kinda felt natural. We both had some songs sitting around and just decided it would be cool.”
House & Home adds, “We’ve been close to Suntitle for over 5 years now. They’re like family. In that time Matt joined their band, Joe moved to Richmond, and we’ve just been bouncing ideas off each other for our own bands. It made too much sense to collaborate a little bit.”
Released via Open Your Ears Records, Split is now out in its entirety and will absolutely blow your mind from the very first note. Thirteen Magazine was able to chat with House & Home and Suntitle on their Split and learn more about the process. Read all about it below!
THIRTEEN: Hi House & Home and Suntitle! Thank you so much for taking the time to answer some questions. Could you tell us a little bit more about your bands?
HOUSE & HOME: We’re an alternative rock band from Richmond, VA!
SUNTITLE: We are a loud rock band that formed in 2017, originally from NJ/PA, but have since relocated to Richmond, Virginia.
THIRTEEN: Split is a collaboration EP between the two of you. What a cool concept! We see so many bands feature one another on songs, but never a true collab in this way. What began this process?
HOUSE & HOME: A lot of our favorite bands have done splits before, and we’ve always talked about doing one with a band we were excited about. We’ve known Suntitle for a long time, and Matt is in both bands. It seemed like a no-brainer.
SUNTITLE: Splits used to be such a more popular thing in the late 2000s in this genre and bands don’t really do it as much anymore. Matt, who drums in both Suntitle and House & Home, brought up the idea and it was pretty much a no brainer.
THIRTEEN: How did you choose the songs you wanted to contribute?
HOUSE & HOME: We had been working on the two songs for a while. They were supposed to come out ahead of a Canadian tour that actually never even happened. When the idea of a split was brought up it was because both bands had some music they were sitting on that they didn’t know how to release.
SUNTITLE: We recorded these songs a little while back and we were just sitting on them.
THIRTEEN: Are there still some songs in the vault that didn’t make this EP? Are you saving them for future projects?
HOUSE & HOME: We’re always writing. We’ve got a backlog of demos that we like to sift through pretty regularly and work on. We’re especially excited about writing new music right now; just feeling really inspired. So, yes, we’re sitting on a lot of ideas, and always coming up with new ones.
SUNTITLE: We definitely have some songs sitting around that will definitely be used for some future release, I’m not sure when or how it will be released but we are still creating everyday.
THIRTEEN: You each formed around the same time and really worked in that DIY aspect of music. How do you think finding one another helped bring you to where you are now?
HOUSE & HOME: It’s really inspiring finding people that you click with that have a similar work ethic when it comes to music. It really boosts the sense of community around what we’re doing and motivates us to push harder. We want to see each other succeed and I think that’s a really powerful thing.
SUNTITLE: When we met back in 17/18 I kinda just knew they were one of those bands that we’d become best friends with. We’ve toured together, pats worked on our songs with us, Matt even ended up filling in on a full US tour and then joined Suntitle.
THIRTEEN: What is your favorite song that you contributed to Split?
HOUSE & HOME: It’s hard to say. We all love both songs. “Cellophane” is just so different from what we’ve done before, and it was written in such an organic way it’s pretty special to us. “At the Bottom” is just so much fun to play live. It might be a toss up, which I know is a cop out answer.
SUNTITLE: After listening to Split, now that it is out, I think “At Your Feet” is my favorite. When we were in the studio and even in the mixing and mastering process, I wasn’t sure about it.
THIRTEEN: Is this collaborative EP style of release something you’d do again?
HOUSE & HOME: Who knows! It could be, I think we’re all focused on just writing more music.
SUNTITLE: Maybe, it would have to be cool, but who knows!
THIRTEEN: What can fans expect to see from you in the coming year?
HOUSE & HOME: A lot of touring, and a lot of things that we can’t quite tell you about yet. It’s going to be a big year for us.
