Girl in Red in Los Angeles
As the lights finally dimmed in preparation for the headliner, everyone’s attention turned to a sudden red spotlight creating a silhouette on the stage curtain. Marie Ulven Ringheim, better known as Girl in Red, stood atop a flight of stairs singing the opening to her recent hit “Doing it Again” before strutting down to the front of the stage. As the song reached the chorus, the lights changed to reveal the rest of her band supporting her from the edges of the stage. Everything from the production design, lighting, and wardrobe seemed to blend seamlessly together, giving the entire set a unique, quirky identity. The vibrant colors of the set combined with her striped tan suit made it feel like Angus Young in a Wes Anderson movie...if Angus Young was a 25-year-old gay pop singer. Aside from entertaining the audience with her most iconic songs like “Too Much,” “I’ll Call You Mine,” and “Serotonin,” her casual way of addressing the audience made everyone feel like they were part of her inner circle. She spoke to her fans as if she’d known them for years, creating an inside joke about Kristen Wiig, making fun of Jojo Siwa, and even signing a wedding album. She performed with reckless freedom, injecting her high energy and free spirit into every step of her unusual dancing. So even though Marie claimed that most of her songs were about “sad girl vibes,” nobody left the Greek Theater feeling blue that night. There’s the pun I’ve been looking for.
