Destroy Boys in Pittsburgh
Destroy Boys, a band formed by Violet Mayugba and Alexia Roditis when they were teenagers in 2015, has been rocking the United States touring their most recent album, “Funeral Soundtrack #4.” Their openers, Sasami and chokecherry, gave amazing performances that thoroughly warmed the crowd up for what was about to come next. Both openers, along with Destroy Boys, emphasized the importance of safe moshing and to pick fans up if they had fallen down. It was such an energetic and intense show, but fans were encouraged to help each other and all three artists created a comfortable space for crowd members to be chaotic in. They played songs that made the crowd go wild from all four of their albums.
Throughout their set, lead vocalist, Alexia Roditis, talked to the crowd like one talks to an old friend or someone they need to express passion to. They did an “exercise” with the crowd where they started at a low volume singing a note to one audience member and let that note spread until everyone heard it. The sound spread quickly and Roditis emphasized how this is similar to how ideas spread. It only takes one idea to catch fire, for better or for worse. They encouraged the crowd to use this for good to uplift people and revolt against injustice. During the end of their set, Roditis said that they usually bring out a partner, but did not have one for Pittsburgh. However, they did encourage the crowd to support the Pittsburgh Food Bank. Roditis ended off by emphasizing to not be discouraged by what has been happening within politics and tied the experience as a performer into the “real world” events that were happening that week. After this, they ended with “Piedmont” played just by Roditis and their most popular song, “I Threw Glass at My Friend’s Eye and Now I’m On Probation.” By the end, the Thunderbird Music Hall in Pittsburgh smelled like the pit as people took the sentiments of the band with them.
