Chloe Star’s “Happy Place” Finds Freedom in Healing
Article by Isabel Dowell
Chloe Star is the definition of a modern day rockstar. She is bold, evocative, openly queer, and a strong tribal and female empowerment advocate. Her latest single, “Happy Place”, is the last of a three part series of singles exploring the effects of a toxic relationship. “Happy Place” helps us understand the release, while “Fool” and “Found My Peace” portray the heartbreak and the awakening, respectively.
On the newest track of this trilogy, Star shares, “I tell a story with these 3 songs — the heartbreak, the awakening, and the release. 'Happy Place' is about that feeling of relief that you experience when you finally feel comfortable being on your own. That's 'Happy Place.'"
“Happy Place” follows the step-by-step process of fully accepting the effects of the relationship and now being able to move on. It’s unapologetically about independence and can be easily understood by other broken hearts around the globe. Star’s blend of pop, rock, punk, and hip-hop brings together a genre that is uniquely hers. No one on the internet is opening up as shamelessly as Star is, which is exactly why she is rising through the ranks as we speak.
Just making her official debut as an artist last year, Chloe Star has already gained the attention of EUPHORIA, EARMILK, Unpublished Magazine, and her dedicated fanbase across Instagram, TikTok, Spotify, and more. Adding Thirteen Magazine to the list of her devoted followers, we were lucky to explore “Happy Place” with Star further, as well as dive into her background and future plans for her career. THIRTEEN: Hi Chloe! Thank you so much for taking the time to do this interview with us! Could you tell us a little bit more about you?
CHLOE STAR: Hi! Thank you for your time! Yea! My name is Chloe Star and I live in LA. I have been making music for years now and am finally walking in my truest self creatively. I’ve just released my new single, "Happy Place,” and I couldn't be more excited about it!
THIRTEEN: Your latest single, “Happy Place”, was just released. Congratulations! What does this song represent?
CHLOE STAR: Thank you!! This song represents freedom from any toxic relationship and realizing that you create your own “Happy Place.”
THIRTEEN: “Happy Place” is also part of a trio of singles, along with “Fool” and “Found My Peace”, that tells a complete story. Why did you choose to spread this journey out rather than express it in one song?
CHLOE STAR: I chose to have the song releases spread out to reflect how breakups go through different stages of healing. So, each song represents a different stage of the healing process. You have the feeling of being a fool, then finding your peace, then finally living in your happy place.
THIRTEEN: Which song of the three was the hardest for you to write and why? Which one was the easiest and why?
CHLOE STAR: Honestly, all three songs flowed so organically. There wasn't one that was harder or easier. I think because I wrote them all in the exact mental state I was in, it all just made so much sense.
THIRTEEN: Outside of music, you are a tribal and female empowerment advocate. How does this affect who you are as a person?
CHLOE STAR: Yes! My family is Native American and I grew up going back and forth from my family's reservation and Los Angeles as a kid, so I really lived two completely different lives growing up. I was always raised to make sure I tell people who I am and where I came from. I want to educate as many people as possible on my family's native culture. Also when it comes to female empowerment, I just have to continue being my truest self in order for that message to get across.
THIRTEEN: It’s noted that journaling and writing poetry helped you find solace during your childhood. That eventually turned into teaching yourself to play piano and guitar. Did you ever imagine those beginnings would get you to where you are now?
CHLOE STAR: Not at all! I just didn't know how to express my emotions as a kid and was on a hunt for anything to make me feel better. Journaling really saved my soul as a kid. Again, it all just organically brought me to where I am today!
THIRTEEN: You made your official debut in 2023. What is something that surprised you about the music industry?
CHLOE STAR: Honestly, at this point, there's not much that truly surprises me. There's a lot of competition in this industry but if you just take out the competition aspect and walk in truth and purpose everything will flow.
THIRTEEN: Still being a fairly new artist, what direction do you hope to take your music in as you enter the second year of your career?
CHLOE STAR: I'm not too sure where my music will go. It is constantly evolving and developing into new and different sounds as the days go. Because of how much music I listen to, I am constantly being inspired by other artists and wanting to incorporate different sounds into my punk pop vibe.
THIRTEEN: If someone is going to listen to your music for the first time, what song do you think they should start with and why?
CHLOE STAR: “Happy Place.” I think that they will instantly catch my vibe from that song!
THIRTEEN: Is there anything exciting planned for 2024 that you can share with us at this time?
CHLOE STAR: Yes! I am dropping an EP this year!! I also have a show coming up in Hollywood on February 8th, which I am so excited about!
