Chappell Roan in Grand Rapids
Fresh off the GUTS World Tour opening for Olivia Rodrigo and making her way to debut at Coachella, Chappell Roan continued her Midwest Princess Tour in Grand Rapids, Michigan, for a sold out show at The Intersection on April 6, 2024. With 1,500 fans in attendance, all dressed in pink and glitter, the room exploded in queer happiness as the rising star commanded the stage from the moment she appeared. Chappell Roan is known for forgoing the traditional opener route and instead finding local drag queens to get the energy in the room going. Three queens — Dona Tella, Mia Cole, and Perry Dox — began the show with campy drag routines, even having dollar bills thrown at the crowd and trying to reach the stars on the raised stage. It was truly an experience and just the beginning.
Chappell Roan’s theme of the night was Super Graphic Ultra Modern Girl, prompting fans to dress in their best alien attire. While many fans followed the dress code to a T, others opted for other options very much reminiscent of Chappell’s discography. Chappell Roan was one of the first shows we covered for Thirteen Magazine and no other show has had 100% crowd participation. Her lyrics are catchy, the energy is contagious, and from front to back every person in attendance was singing, dancing, and bouncing along to each track from Chappell’s debut album, The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess. She even covered Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance” and played a song from the very beginning of her career, “School Nights”.
Her biggest single, “Pink Pony Club”, has always been the closer to her sets and leaves the crowd screaming each and every word. Even after Chappell left the stage, fans were buzzing and begging for more. As the GA crowd shuffled out, there were smiles, there were tears, and most importantly, there was an overwhelming sense of happiness over the audience. Try and be anything other than jovial at a Chappell Roan show, I dare you.
Chappell will make another stop in Michigan on June 1, 2024 at the Kalamazoo State Theatre to continue her Midwest Princess Tour. This is after she plays two weekend at Coachella and makes a stop at Hangout Fest, but before her time at multiple Pride festivals, Governor's Ball, Bonnaroo, the Capitol Hill Block Party, Lollapalooza, Hinterland, and then makes her way into the United Kingdom. With only a few years of stardom under her belt, Chappell Roan is on her way to becoming a household name, probably by the end of this summer, and her stardom will only continue from there.
If you are looking for a place to truly feel included, a space to sing and dance your heart out, and a community to cry with, a Chappell Roan show is the spot to be.
