Benson Boone's “Pretty Slowly”: A Deep Dive into Nostalgia and Self-Reflection

Article by Evie Olding

Born and raised in Monroe, Washington, Benson Boone began his career by sharing his music on the viral social media platform, TikTok, following his American Idol audition. His unique sound and engaging stage presence quickly gained people’s attention, leading to a growing fanbase.

Boone continues to captivate audiences with his music, releasing "Pretty Slowly" as the second follow-up single to his debut album, Fireworks and Rollerblades, on August 15.

Although Boone didn't make an official announcement about the release date of "Pretty Slowly," he mentioned during his Lollapalooza Aftershow in Chicago that the single would be out on August 15.

His new pop song, “Pretty Slowly”, starts by telling a story about reminiscing on a past relationship. As the song unfolds, listeners are taken on a journey through the lingering memories and emotions of this relationship. The lyrics “You were every shade of perfect/ And then the colors blurred/ And you’ll never love me like you did” are just some of the lyrics that highlight the lingering feeling of nostalgia and the pain behind the realization of a fading relationship.

As the song continues, it dives into the narrator’s feelings of concern and worry, expressing the desire to know if the ex is okay. As the listener continues to hear the song, the bridge introduces a saddening reflection with the lyrics, “Somewhere deep in you/ Somewhere deep in me/ Oh there’s still two lovers/ So who the hell are we?”. The song concludes with a powerful sense of unresolved emotion ending with “So who the hell are we?”, leaving the listeners pondering on the lingering impact of love.

As a devoted listener of Benson Boone, I really do enjoy this song both lyrically and sonically. For me, this song is not about a past relationship, but rather about thinking about your past self.
