Banshee’s “THE ANGEL IN THE SOUND” Mixes Musical Genres

Article by Isabel Dowell

Combining ethereal synths and harmonies with eruptive, emotional vocals, Banshee is mixing musical genres to create one that is uniquely her own. Her latest single, “THE ANGEL IN THE SOUND”, bridges mermaid-core with EDM and screamo to explore a world after abuse and assault that celebrates healing and release.

On the single, Banshee shares, “This song is my artist statement, which is creating beauty and other worlds as a way to heal and thrive. It's inspired by the Michelangelo quote "I saw the angel in the marble, and I carved until I set him free." That's how I've always approached making music--I'm just bringing to life worlds that already exist in my head. I'm also inspired by the Aestheticism movement, which challenged the Victorian idea that art had to have a moral lesson, and celebrated beauty and "art for art's sake."

Being the sole writer and producer behind Banshee, Rachel Knight is able to express her experiences on a more personal level. This move in her career allows her to break away from the abuse and sexual assault she experienced while playing in bands in her local music scene, to finding a community of others who appreciate her for her honesty and ability to turn a heavy situation into something more open and expressive.

Her 2022 debut album, FAIRY METAL, gained accolades from publications like Loudwire, Alternative Press, and Revolver. The latter even named her an artist to watch for in 2022. Since then, she’s been featured on a long list of leading Spotify playlists, amassed over 600K followers on TikTok, held her first even headline show – titled the Cult of Banshee – and raised nearly $2,000 for RAINN, the nation’s largest anti-sexual violence non-profit organization.

Banshee is destined for great things, with an even greater purpose to motivate her. Give “THE ANGEL IN THE SOUND” a listen and follow along with Banshee’s success.
