Article by Evie Olding
California indie-pop trio, Almost Monday, released “tidal wave”, the third single off of their upcoming debut album on June 28.
Almost Monday consists of its three band members Dawson Daugherty (vocals), Luke Fabry (bass), and Cole Clisby (guitar). Throughout their music career so far, they have been able to embody creating music that has not only groovy melodies, but also innovative soundscapes that captivate their audience.
Their new surf pop song “tidal wave”, starts off telling the story of an enchanting encounter between someone and the barista, sparking an instant and powerful infatuation. As the song unfolds, the listeners are swept into the vivid fantasies he envisions with her. The lyrics, “Thick as thieves, we’re Bonnie and Clyde / Baby, come and arrest me, she’s my partner in crime” are only some of the lyrics that hint at what type of relationship he wants to have with her. These lyrics, among others, paint a picture of the love that he is yearning for.
As the narrative builds, the pre-chorus starts off as “Turned into your house, on the couch / laying in your summer blouse”. Moving into the chorus, Almost Monday describes this type of infatuation as a tidal wave. All of the fantasies, along with the interaction that he has had with the barista, have moved into this overwhelming manifestation which could also be called a tidal wave.
Almost Monday’s debut album’s release date has not yet been released, but their three singles for the album, “tidal wave”, “can’t slow down” and “is it too late?”, have captured the surf pop sound perfectly.
As both a devoted listener and a fan of Almost Monday since their exceptional performance at Lollapalooza 2021, I think that this is one of the best songs that they have released. The way that the song blends the catchy rhythms with their storytelling showcases the band’s exceptional talent and creativity
